Structural Design (ET)

Elective Module, winter semester

The elective seminar "Structural Design" builds on the courses Structural Systems, Building Materials, and Load-Bearing Structures. Design strategies for simple and complex structures are developed, and the appropriate applications and limitations of building materials and structural systems are explored and applied in students’ own designs. The course emphasises a practice-oriented, creative, and constructive design approach without calculations or analytical verification.

Through workshops and case studies, students investigate the design possibilities of trusses, frames, arches, cables, and suspended beams, as well as principles of prestressing, cantilevering, and high-rise structures. Spatial structures such as grids, folded plates, shells, and membranes may also be examined and developed by the students.
